Every year, many families weigh the decision to continue playing recreational (“rec”) softball or to make the jump to travel/club softball as players look for more competitive play. This jump typically requires a significant commitment of time and financial resources.
USA Softball formed the Select program to provide additional opportunities for players interested in a more competitive level of play. MVGS Select teams will play against Select teams from other leagues.
Spring Select operates under very specific rules from USA Softball that are slightly different from the Fall Select program some may be familiar with.
Probably the biggest difference is that unlike Fall Select, Spring Select is in addition to Spring rec play not instead of rec play. All players in the Spring Select program must be registered and participating on a rec team for the Spring season. Spring rec league is the first priority and should be considered as such through the season. Players are expected to fully participate in practices and games for their Spring rec team.
Spring Select participation is a separate registration and will require an additional financial commitment from families of approximately $100 to cover the cost of jerseys, umpires, tournament fees, and other incidentals.
Spring Select Goals
The goal in Spring Select play is to represent MVGS against other leagues. This is competitive play and winning becomes a more primary goal. Playing time, at bats, and positions are not guaranteed. While some players may prefer one position to another, it is important to recognize that at this competitive level of play, all positions are critical to the team’s success, and the manager will assign them accordingly.
